Columban Week of Action: Protect Creation
Columban Week of Action Day 2: Protect Creation
Executive Order: Last Tuesday, January 24, the new administration signed an executive order signaling its intent to advance construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines and expedite important environmental impact reviews of infrastructure projects. While these orders do not immediately restart the construction of either pipeline, they show the new administration’s support for increased extraction of fossil fuels.
Columban Position: Columban communities around the world experience the devastating impacts of climate change and suffer the consequences of harmful extractive industries. As a result, the Missionary Society of St. Columban recently announced their plan to divest from fossil fuels and turn to positive impact investing. Columbans around the U.S. stood in opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline and supported the decision to stop construction. We know that the continued extraction and use of fossil fuels will only multiply the disastrous effects of climate change.
How To Respond:
Pray: In Pope Francis’ ground-breaking encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si, the Pontiff grounds us in the importance of caring for both our environment and those most affected by environmental degradation. We reflect on his quote: “Today, however, we have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”
Educate: Use our Laudato Si’ Study and Action Guide to learn more about our faith tradition’s call to call to care for our common home!
Act: : Take 5 minutes and call your Members of Congress TODAY to raise your voice in support of environmental policies that will not exacerbate the effects of climate change and that are in line with our responsibility to care for our common home.
My name is (insert name) and I'm from (city/town). I'm calling today to register my opposition to the new administration's recent executive order on the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines. These actions are a step backward in the effort to reduce the devastating impacts of climate change. As a person of faith, I believe climate change raises serious moral concerns about the use of our planet's finite resources and the devastating impacts on the most vulnerable communities around the world. In light of the administration's actions, I urge you to stand for policies that respect our sacred relationship with God's creation, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and invest in renewable energy sources.
