Tell your Member of Congress to support a faithful budget!

Dear Columban Advocate,

As Congress returns to Washington, D.C. today from their 2-week recess, hundreds of Christian advocates will welcome them back to the Capitol for the annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days Lobby Day!

This past weekend, advocates from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C. to explore the theme of this year’s EAD conference: “Confronting Chaos, Forging Community: Challenging Racism, Materialism, and Militarism”.

Our own Fr. Pat Cunningham joined the conference’s international panel to speak on the impact of U.S. militarism on communities in Korea. (Read more about Fr. Pat’s work in last week’s Weekly Reflection!)

Just as EAD participants learn how to advocate for policies that ensure the just allocation of resources for the common good of all, Congress returns to work to finalize the federal budget for fiscal year 2017. This means they must agree on how to fund the federal government by this Friday.

Today, we invite you to join Fr. Pat and EAD advocates in calling on Congress to make budget decisions that advance the common good.

Rather than increasing Pentagon spending, we urge Congress to preserve robust funding for programs that help provide support to people living in poverty and other vulnerable persons in America and abroad, address systemic racism, and exercise responsible care for the earth.

Below are the two main ‘asks’:

  • We call on Congress to robustly fund human needs in the United States and abroad.
  • We call on Congress to reject increases in Pentagon spending, especially at the expense of human needs.

You can find more information on the official Ecumenical Advocacy Days ‘ask’ here!
