Lenten Reflection Resources
Lent begins tomorrow with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. A time for spiritual growth, repentance, and self-reflection, Lent allows us time to reflect on how we are living our faith’s call to protect creation and human dignity, and work for justice and peace both individually and structurally. Check out the below resources put together by our partner organizations to help guide you in your Lenten journey this year:
Weekly Reflection on Justice Lenten series—by the Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach
Members of the Columban community, Columban Fathers, co-workers, interns, volunteers, and short-term missionaries, reflect on the Lenten season of transformation and penance. Listening to Pope Francis’ call to “weep over injustice” and soften our hearts, in our reflection series with the theme, Tears of Conversion: A Season of Transformation, members of the community reflect on how God’s mercy has entered their heart. Lenten Novena for Protectors of Mother Earth—by the Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas' Justice Institute Team
The Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas’ Institute Justice Team developed the Lenten Novena for Protectors of Mother Earth to invite people of faith to join in solidarity with people, especially indigenous communities, who are courageously speaking out against the impacts of extractive industries. These nine days begin with Ash Wednesday, and include the one-year anniversary of the murder of Honduran indigenous leader Berta Caceres, as well as International Women’s Day.
The Grace of Earth Lenten Resource—by the Columban Mission Institute
The Grace of Earth Lenten Resource, produced by the Columban Mission Institute’s Centre for Peace Ecology and Justice in Australia, consists of six weekly Lenten Reflections related to the Gospel readings which focus on six aspects of Earth's life support systems: Atmosphere, Oceans, Fresh Water, Land, Plant Life, and Animal Life. This resource explores these six Earth life support systems as ways of God revealing, God inspiring, and God challenging.
A Journey with Gospel Nonviolence—by Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns
The 2017 Maryknoll Lenten Reflection Guide called A Journey with Gospel Nonviolence, contains reflections, questions, prayers, and actions based on each week’s Gospel reading. It also includes written reflections and recorded discussions by the 83 Catholic peacemakers who attended the Nonviolence and Just Peace conference in Rome in April 2016. Use this guide individually or in small groups to reflect upon our life patterns, to pray more deeply, and renew our spirits to face the realities of our world.
Reconciliation with Justice—by Pax Christi USA
Each year, Pax Christi USA produces new, original reflections for the season of Lent. This year’s resource, Reconciliation with Justice, is rooted in the daily scriptures and the spirituality of nonviolence. These reflections provide a connection to God and are a source of strength for those working toward justice and peace. You can download this reflection guide right to your electronic devices, including your phone, so you can reflect on-the-go
